A manhole fire has cause power outages on the West Side of Manhattan. Subways, theaters, traffic lights, and Times Square's Great White Way are in darkness – on the eve of the 1977 blackout.

On This Day... On July 11, 1804, Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton and Vice President Aaron Burr met on the dueling grounds across the Hudson in #Weehawken, New Jersey, to resolve a poisoned personal and political relationship. They chose the same spot Hamilton's son had died in a duel just three years earlier. The duel ended with Hamilton being mortally wounded and Burr being wanted for murder. Hamilton was only 47 years old.

Starting this fall the MTA will launch the long-debated F express service. The limited express trains will only run four trains, two in the morning and two in the evening at rush hours. The trains will run express from Church Street to Jay Street-MetroTech, stopping only once at 7th Ave.
The original F Express (starting in 1933) also stopped at the lower level of Bergen Street, which has been abandoned for decades – the only trace being the large shiny steel doors that used to lead down to the platforms. The new express will use this lower level track without stopping.

The line has been overcapacity for years and straphangers at stations like Bergen often have to wait for several trains to finally squeeze in during rush hour. Although two trains will run express during rush hour the MTA is not adding any more trains to the schedule, just diverting four to run express daily.

Council Member @brad.lander who has been studying the F Express service since residents complained about the problems plaguing the line, commented on the service change: "We would be delighted if they were actually adding F express service. But this plan adds no service whatsoever, it simply eliminates service at six local stations that are already experiencing overcrowding,... They have been running a rogue F express for months, often skipping local stops with no notice or even announcement. Despite the effort to dress this up as an improvement for some commuters, bypassing these stations amounts to cutting service for thousands of other riders." Tomorrow morning the Women's soccer team will be honored with a New York City tradition 133 years old – a ticker-tape parade up Broadway. The tradition of dumping paper on the city's heroes dates back to October 1886. As a group marched down Broadway for the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty, office workers along Broadway and Wall Street began dumping rolls of stock ticker-tape out of their windows, mimicking confetti. Ticker-tape, a one-inch-wide ribbon of paper used to record stock quotes in "ticker" machines, was invented in 1867. As the buildings got taller at the turn of the century, all stocked with excess ticker-tape, the Broadway canyon became an iconic image, the skies swirling with the ticker-tape pouring out of windows, falling down to the streets where it would pile up knee-high.

Starting in 1919, the city recognized the importance of the parade and officially instituted it as a civic function, running from Bowling Green to City Hall. Starting that year, the mayor decides who will recieve the honor of a ticker-tape parade. The first city-sponsored parade welcomed home the soldiers after World War I.

During the mid-century, parades became more common, with 130 parades between 1945 and 1965, once as many as three in one week in the spring of 1950. To ensure the dramatic effect of the ticker-tape, the city started delivering confetti and shredded paper to Broadway office buildings during the 1960s.

The Downtown Alliance commemorated the past parades with granite markers along the sidewalk of Broadway's Canyon of Heroes.
Some of the honorees over the years have included Amelia Earhart (1932), JFK (1960), the first astronauts to land on the moon (1969), Nelson Mandela (1990), the NY Rangers (1994), the Yankees and Mets (multiple times), and most recently, the Women's National Soccer Team after winning the #FIFA World Cup in 2015.

NYC in 1881 😲
This 1881 photograph of Downtown Manhattan from the under-construction Brooklyn Bridge shows a drastically different Manhattan skyline than the one that would emerge over the next twenty years. As seen in the photograph, most buildings reach no more than five stories, and the overall landscape is low save for a few high buildings in the background. These were churches and the first skyscrapers—the Tribune Building and Western Union Building, offering a glimpse of what was to come. The tall, slender, tower seen in the foreground of the Trinity Church spire is the 175-foot, 1885 MCCULLOUGH SHOT TOWER. Shot towers produced musket balls ammunition by dropping molten lead from a great height into pools of water.

This is truly an amazing photo: The Long Island Motor Parkway (AKA Vanderbilt Parkway) in 1908 with the Manhattan skyline in the background. Built in 1908 and running from Queens to Ronkonkoma, Long Island, historians have called it the first road in the country built specifically for automobiles. The privately built toll road featured overpasses and bridges, with a toll of $2 when it opened – limiting the roadway for wealthy men wishing to race their new cars.
