The tallest office and residential buildings in NYC have topped out! Central Park Tower, the ultra-luxury, super-slender residential tower on 57th Street reached its final height of 1,500 feet, making it the tallest residential building in the world. Just to the east, One Vanderbilt, the supertall office building adjacent to Grand Central has also topped out, now waiting for its spire to be installed, which will bring the skyscraper to 1,401 feet. One Vanderbilt is contributing $220 million to transit upgrades, including a new station for the 4,5,6 subway that will accommodate 4,000 to 6,000 more subway passengers per hour. Additionally, Vanderbilt Ave between 42nd and 43rd will be pedestrian-only, helping to make better pedestrian access to Grand Central.
The skyscrapers represent the new wave of construction that has swept the city over the past several years and has shown little signs of slowing down. Currently, there are three chart-topping skyscrapers proposed, one of which, Tower Fifth, would take the crown from Central Park Tower, currently the highest roof in the Western Hemisphere. There are currently 25 skyscrapers over 750 feet tall that are proposed or under construction in New York City.

On this day in 1920, a bomb exploded outside Federal Hall on Wall Street, killing 38 people and injuring hundreds more. A man driving a horse-drawn cart had stopped in front of the US Assay Office, next to Federal Hall and across from JP Morgan's headquarters and the Stock Exchange. The many quickly disappeared into the crowd and minutes later the cart exploded, instantly killing 30. The New York Stock Exchange was immediately closed, and JP Morgan's chief clerk was killed.
There were many theories into the bombing; attempted assassination of JP Morgan, who turned out to be in Europe; an attempt to rob the Sub Treasury, which planned to transport $900 million in gold bars that day; or communists who wanted to send a message, at the center of American capitalism.
The FBI was never able to solve the case but pointed towards Italian anarchists, confirming it was an intentional act of terrorism, then the deadliest in the United States.

Today you can still see the damage on the limestone facade of 23 Wall (JP Morgan Building) from the bomb's shrapnel.

Madelon Vriesendorp’s Manhattan Project

Together with her husband Rem Koolhaas, Vriesendorp began working on a number of sketches, drawings and paintings under the name “Manhattan“, inhabited by anthropomorphic architectures and infused by oniric imagination and surreal themes.
“Flagrant Delit“, arguably the most iconic of these ones, is a representation of post-coital Empire State and Chrysler Buildings caught in bed by the Rockefeller Building, representing “one of the most beguiling attempts to depict the unconscious double-life of modern architecture.” Her work was vastly used for book and magazine covers, (notably on the cover of Delirious New York in 1978 by Rem Koolhaas.

M.V.’s body of work has been recently reevaluated and collected in a retrospective exhibition at the Architectural Association School of Architecture and, later, at the Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel. -Sock Studio

#FacadeFridays – Only 1/5 of the original McKim, Mead & White designed Brooklyn Museum was ever constructed – if completed, it would have been the largest museum structure in the world. These photos document the phases of construction between 1895 and 1926. The second photo shows a half-constructed museum, with the sole West Wing, which opened in 1897, and the Central Pavilion, completed in 1905. The East Wing wing (1910) is seen in the third photo; notice the bright white of the new wing's facade. The court on the northeast side was delayed due to World War I and not finished until 1926! The final image shows an early perspective of the original plan, which was never completed.

The museum had a monumental staircase leading up to the central pavilion but by the 1930s plans to create a more "direct" entrance were floated. The Municipal Art Commission found their chance in 1934 when Mckim Mead & White principals were out of the country and demolished the staircase, greatly modifying the design of the museum. The auditorium was also demolished to create a new entrance on the ground floor. In 2004 the museum opened a new $63 million glass entrance pavilion and public plaza where the staircase was originally located. The entrance pavilion is supposed to recall the original staircase, but we would have preferred the staircase in the original design. What do you think?

In the months following the attacks of September 11, 2001, New Yorkers were already discussing what should become of the sixteen-acre site at ground zero. Differing opinions of what the land should be used for – memorial, office towers, and even residential – was a contested topic among the news, media, planners and the public. 18 years later the site is completely transformed, but not finished. Two major towers remain empty, without designs or use designations.

#MapMondays! Herman Bollmann's 1963 #Axonometric Map of #Midtown. Definitely one of the most extraordinary maps of NYC - One of the greatest cartographic feats of all time.

Georgaphicus described the cartographers method in creating the masterpiece and how they were able to illustrate the dense metropolis from the same angle and height without obscuring or distorting the surrounding cityscape: "[Bollmann] and his team designed and built special cameras to take 67,000 photos, 17,000 from the air. Using these photos as a base, they then began to hand draw the entire city. Using then-secret cartographic techniques, Bollmann and team managed to depict the smallest details while simultaneously conveying the city's soaring, vertiginous beauty.

The $32 million WTC Oculus skylight will not open this year on September 11th.

The $4 billion Calatrava-designed WTC Oculus starting leaking this past winter, forcing the Port Authority to patch up the 355-foot skylight with $30,000 of flextape. The $32 million dollar skylight is retractable; designed to open on September 11th each year and illuminate the space with sunlight during the exact time planes hit the Twin Towers. The #skylight is operated by 40 individual glass panels, which must each individually open or close – controlled by software that often requires restarting multiple times to get it to work properly.
Today Curbed broke the news that the Port Authority is still determining how to fix the skylight and will it will not open this year: “Under the advice of expert consultants, we are conducting engineering analysis on the Oculus skylight operating systems and reviewing carefully the best approach to repair a complex, one-of-a-kind architectural feature,” a Port Authority spokesperson told Curbed in a statement.
